The Writer includes various factions and groups in its story. Some are fictional while others are inspired by real-life organisations. Below, we've outlined a few of the factions that listeners will come across during Season 1.
The Ruskibar Dominion

Originating as a liberal movement on university campuses throughout the Western world and Asia, the Ruskibar Dominion gradually shifted toward extremism in the months preceding the Third World War. Led by Serik Volkov, the group formed its own separatist enclave deep in the forests of Russia. Tensions rose when Nathaniel Creed, one of its members, assassinated a fascist Member of Parliament in Berlin, sparking the War. Since then, the Dominion has accumulated billions in funding from unknown sources, which is currently under investigation by the FBI.
Australia

During World War III, Australia has emerged as both a frontline and a sanctuary. Its strategic location, combined with limited resources and increasing political pressure from allies, compels the nation to enhance its military capabilities. Civil unrest brews as a result of compulsory service, prompting the government to rely on specialised units, such as Foxtrot, to safeguard its borders and intelligence resources.
The United Kingdom

The United Kingdom enters the conflict divided. Political shifts and economic pressures have left it vulnerable. Nevertheless, the nation offers vital intelligence, technology, and covert assistance to AUKUS operations. Their involvement in Season 1 is most evident through Foxtrot’s mission in supporting the Royal Family. Despite its decline, the UK remains resilient, playing a key role in leading the victory against The Ruskibar Dominion.
Foxtrot Unit

An undercover Australian special operations team, consisting of misfits, high achievers, and adaptable operatives, is dispatched when diplomatic efforts fail, intelligence is lacking, or the government requires plausible deniability. Their objective is to influence public perception of the war through The Writer Initiative, a government-approved blog and audio narrative. This initiative documents the conflict from the perspective of one soldier, engaging readers with his experiences and providing curated interviews with significant political figures.
AUKUS
Initially established as a defense pact among Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, AUKUS transforms into a formidable wartime super-alliance. In the course of World War III, it serves as the cornerstone of the Western defense strategy, overseeing intelligence, technology, and special operations. Their directives have the power to influence and determine Foxtrot’s missions.
The Australian Defence Force
In Season 1, the primary characters are conscripted into the Australian Defence Force (ADF). The ADF invests millions of tax dollars in training these draftees, readying them for the Third World War at different bootcamps in Ballarat, Wagga Wagga, and other locations.
